Response to December 2025 Petition

The Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University (LCOOU) Board of Regents is aware of an online petition currently circulating regarding the University. It is important to clarify that the petition is based on information that does not accurately represent the circumstances facing LCOOU.

Over the past year, the University has encountered significant institutional challenges. The Board of Regents was unexpectedly required to address the departure of the former President and to make timely decisions regarding interim leadership. During Executive Session, the Board carefully evaluated multiple considerations, including ongoing initiatives, operational needs, and an evolving federal landscape. Following thoughtful deliberation and in accordance with its responsibilities, the Board appointed the University’s Chief of Staff as Interim President.

As a Lac Courte Oreilles tribal member, the Interim President is strongly committed to LCOOU’s mission and to serving students and the broader Anishinaabe community.  The Board of Regents has full confidence in the interim president and their ability to guide the University forward with professionalism, respect, and integrity.

Since the appointment, the Board has noted continued opposition from individuals who disagree with this decision. While differing viewpoints are expected and respected, the Board remains focused on advancing the University rather than revisiting past administrative matters that no longer reflect the institution’s current leadership or direction.

The petition further claims that certain former employees were terminated by the University. This assertion is incorrect. The individuals referenced voluntarily resigned from their positions. While the University is unable to disclose specific personnel details due to confidentiality obligations, it is important to clearly state that these departures were not the result of termination decisions by the Board of Regents or the Interim President. The University recognizes and appreciates the contributions of these individuals and wishes them success in their future endeavors.

LCOOU continues to work collaboratively with its partners to move forward in a constructive and respectful manner, honoring the efforts of recent years while remaining focused on the University’s long-term sustainability and success.

The Board of Regents stands firmly behind the appointment of the Interim President and is proud of the leadership demonstrated during this challenging period. The Board’s foremost priority remains the well-being of the University, its faculty and staff, and, most importantly, its students.

Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University remains committed to its mission of providing quality post-secondary education to Anishinaabe communities and advancing Ojibwe language, culture, and history. The Board invites community members to engage in upcoming strategic planning efforts in the months ahead as we work together to strengthen the future of LCOOU.
