Pacheco Named Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University’s 2026 Alumni of the Year

Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University is proud to announce Na’aabanwe (Early Riser), Roberto Pacheco, as its 2026 Alumni of the Year.

This year’s selection process was especially meaningful, with an overwhelming number of nominations highlighting the remarkable accomplishments and community contributions of LCOOU graduates. Alumni of the Year recipients embody the University’s mission and the Seven Grandfather Teachings: Nibwaakaawin (Wisdom), Zaagi'idiwin (Love), Minaadendamowin (Respect), Aakode'ewin (Bravery), Gwayakwaadiziwin (Honesty), Dabaadendiziwin (Humility), and Debwewin (Truth).

Pacheco was nominated by peers and community members who described him as a dedicated family member, a respectful caregiver to elders, and a compassionate leader who is always willing to support others. His commitment to serving his community and protecting the natural world reflects the values that define Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University.

An enrolled member of the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Nation, Pacheco also has family ties to the St. Croix and White Earth Nations. His Ojibwe name, Na’aabanwe, means “Early Riser.” He proudly honors the diverse heritage of his family, including his father’s family, who were migrant workers from Chihuahua, Mexico.

Pacheco’s educational journey reflects both determination and a deep commitment to environmental stewardship. He earned an Associate of Science degree from LCOOU in 2022, an Associate degree in Agriculture and Natural Resources in 2023, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2024. He recently completed a Master of Tribal Resources and Environmental Stewardship degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Throughout his academic career, Pacheco has remained a strong advocate for students while pursuing his educational goals. He views higher education as a way to honor the sacrifices of his ancestors and to help protect the lands and resources that sustain future generations. His vision is rooted in serving others, inspiring people to define their own dreams, and creating positive change within their communities.

While his academic and professional accomplishments are impressive, Pacheco says his greatest joy comes from being an uncle to his many nieces and nephews. His dedication to family, community, and the environment exemplifies the values that LCOOU seeks to instill in all graduates.

Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University proudly recognizes Na’aabanwe, Roberto Pacheco, as its 2026 Alumni of the Year and celebrates his continued leadership, service, and commitment to future generations.
