Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University to Host Historic National Registry EMT Examination

(Lac Courte Oreilles) – May 5, 2026 – Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University (LCOOU) will host the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) examination on

Saturday, June 6, marking a historic milestone for both the institution and the state of Wisconsin.

Since becoming an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) training center in March 2024, LCOOU has trained 51 Emergency Medical Responders and six Emergency Medical Technicians. The university is currently the only tribal training center in Wisconsin authorized to provide this level of EMS education.

This event represents the first time the NREMT examination will be administered through a tribal training center in the state. Eight current EMT students, along with six program alumni, have been invited to participate in this inaugural testing opportunity at LCOOU.

State of Wisconsin officials have recognized the significance of this achievement and have encouraged the university to formally commemorate the occasion. The administration of a national certification examination at a tribal institution reflects expanding access to high-quality healthcare training within tribal communities. It also underscores LCOOU’s ongoing commitment to workforce development and the advancement of community health outcomes.

Graduates of LCOOU’s EMS programs are currently serving in critical roles across the region, including with the Lac Courte Oreilles Fire Department, Lac Courte Oreilles Police Department, Lac Courte Oreilles Health Clinic, Town of Hayward Fire Department, Sawyer County Police Department, and Tamarack Health–Hayward.

The EMS program is coordinated by Les Luder, who brings more than 41 years of experience in emergency medical services to the role.

For more information about the EMS program or to enroll, please contact the LCOOU Admissions Office at 715-634-4790 or visit www.lco.edu/reg.
