Program Spotlight: Elders Scholarship

How long have you been raising money for the Elder’s Scholarship?

We’ve been raising money for six years, the same group comes each Wednesday to serve lunch. We started holding this fundraiser because of the need that our students have, education is important.

We provide two scholarships for $500 each year. Lunch is $5 for students and $6 for all others.

Why do you host the lunch fundraiser?

To feed your people is a great honor. To feed the students and make sure they get enough to eat is a greater honor.

Making lunch keeps us busy and keeps us growing so we don’t get old.

Why is a college education important?

You need an education to get anywhere today, Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College teaches structure, responsibility and work ethic.

It helps to develop the individual.

Why is the College important in our community?

Being among the people here is important.

The college is great for helping kids to learn, the College gives them a chance.

A teacher once said “when you start to stop learning you will die.” There is so much to do, keep learning.

What words of encouragement would you share with students?

Persevere. Aim for your goal.

I was told I couldn’t go, but I did. If you work hard enough you can accomplish anything.

The LCO Elders Scholarship application deadline is April 15, 2019. The application can be found here:
