Invasive Species Education

Sawyer County Lakes Forum Invasive Species Project

The CFISEM Project has collaborated with the Sawyer County Lakes Forum, and the LCO Conservation Department on a massive, invasive species education based, outreach campaign for all of LCO and Sawyer County.  The outreach will be aimed at resort/hotel owners, bait dealers, boat dealers, fishing guides, and lake associations within Sawyer County.  The goal was to provide them with educational materials to enhance their understanding of invasive species and how invasive species affect their lively-hood/economic stability, in hopes that they will pass the materials and education on to their customers.

Fishing Guides & Bait Dealers: Invasive Species Luncheon

The Sawyer County Lakes Forum hosted an Invasive Species Luncheon at Famous Daves for the Fishing Guides and Bait Dealers of Sawyer County.  They enjoyed a free Famous Daves BBQ Pork Sandwich w/slaw and beans (courtesy of the SCLF), while listening to a variety of speakers.  Bruce Meyers, Chairperson of SCLF, was Master of Ceremonies.  Speakers included; Milt Diekman, a local fishing guide, Kristy Maki, LCO Conservation Department Plant Ecologist, and Erik Olson, LCO Ojibwe Community College Extension Water Quality Educator. Besides Kristy's excellent presentation on invasive species, we also handed out packets of Invasive Species information.  We had a great turn out and positive evaluations.

Hayward Lakes Visitors & Convention Bureau Annual Meeting

The SCLF also spoke at the Hayward Lakes Visitors & Convention Bureau Annual Meeting on Invasive Species.  Bruce Meyers, Dale Anderson (Nelson Lake Association), and Erik Olson were there to hand out educational packets and a poster to be put in all of the rental rooms at the resorts and hotels.  Erik Olson spoke briefly on the Chippewa Flowage Invasive Species Education & Management Project.  We had positive feedback, in that we handed out around 500+ poster to the members.

The campaign also sent out over 400 AIS educational packets to fishing guides, bait dealers, boat dealers, resort/hotel owners, and lakes associations who could not attend the meetings.
