CPS 100 Computer Basics 3 cr
This class is designed for the beginning student and will allow the student to gain proficiency using Microsoft Word as well as become familiar with using the Internet, email, attachments, search engines, scanners, and digital cameras. The advanced student may choose to test out of this course. (Fall, Spring)
CPS 101 Computer Applications 3 cr
This class begins with advanced techniques in Microsoft Word and then goes on to teach proficiency in Microsoft Excel, and Access. Upon completion, the student will have the skills necessary to pass the Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) Certification tests for each of these programs. (Spring) Prerequisite – CPS 100
CPS 105 introduction to databases 3 cr
Databases
are the best tools ever invented for keeping track of the things you care about.
Relational database management systems are vital to many organizations. Many
database management system (DBMS) tools run on a variety of hardware platforms.
The differences among the tools can be many, but all serious products have one
thing in common: They support data access and manipulation in SQL, the
industry-standard language specifically designed to enable people to create and
manage databases. Students will learn to use SQL to build relational databases
and get useful information out of them. This course will show the student
step-by-step how to make database designs a reality using SQL:2003. People
with skills in creating and managing databases are in high demand in industry
today.
CPS 110 WEB PAGE DEVELOPMENT 3 CR
This class will teach the student the basics in web page development using the latest versions of HTML and XML and Cascading Style Sheets. Software used to do this will include Microsoft FrontPage and Adobe GoLive. In addition, the class will explore the use of various multimedia technologies including flash and streaming media. Students will learn to upload using FTP. Students will also learn about the differences between various browsers and versions and the basics of including scripts. (Spring) Prerequisite – CPS 100.
CPS 116 Pc-ware 3 cr
This introductory survey course covers hardware and software installation, configuration, and troubleshooting. Upon completion, students will have the requisite skills to sit the A+ Hardware exam which is the first of 2 exams for the CompTIA A+ certification. (Fall) Prerequisite – CPS 100
CPS 122 Cisco I 3 cr
Some objectives for this course include the following: identify and describe the functions of each of the seven layers of the OSI reference model, describe data link and network addresses and identify key differences between them, define and describe the function of the OSI Network layer. Students will be able to: define and describe the function of a MAC address, define and explain the five conversion steps of data encapsulation, describe the different classes of IP addresses and subnetting, and identify the functions of the TCP/IP network-layer protocols. (Fall)
CPS 123 Cisco II 3 cr
Some objectives for this course are to: examine router elements (RAM, ROM, CDP show,) describe connection-oriented network service and connectionless network service, and identify their key differences. Students will be able to: define flow control and describe the three basic methods used in networking, manage configuration files from the privileged exec mode, list problems that each routing type encounters when dealing with topology changes, and describe techniques to reduce the number of these problems. (Spring)
CPS 200 Server Administration 3 cr
Students will learn how to install and configure server software, create and manage user accounts, set policies and permissions, monitor network, configure and enable network security. (Spring) Prerequisites – CPS 116 and CPS 122.
CPS 205 Computer Graphics 3 cr
This class will teach the student how to use powerful imaging editing software to manipulate photos and graphics. Some of the software that will be used is Jasc Paint Shop Pro and Microsoft PowerPoint, as well as exposing the student to Adobe Photoshop. (Fall) Prerequisite – CPS 100.
